New Moons in General

New moons coincide with new beginnings and are best suited for intention setting and initiating new endeavors.

New moons occur every 28 days. Over the course of one year, there will be a new moon in each of the twelve signs, as well as each of the twelve life areas (called houses) in your birth chart. You can use these events as annual check-ins for each aspect of your life by considering the topics represented in that new moon's chart and setting related goals for the corresponding life area. That way, you'll intentionally work on each aspect of your life throughout the year, focusing on one per month. The Topics by Rising Sign section at the end of this article will help you determine which life-area this new moon will activate in your natal chart.

The day of the new moon is the time to set your intentions. The two weeks following the new moon are typically excellent times to take initial steps related to those intentions. I also recommend setting goals and making plans for the next six months around those intentions.

This New Moon's Chart Features

  • Moon conjunct Sun in Pisces' second decan: We begin a new cycle of relating to emotions that flow and change states like water: one moment fluid and adaptable, next frozen solid and brittle, next gaseous, invisible, floating away. Pisces is a constantly shifting state, visible and obscured, physical and immaterial. How do we reconcile being so many things at once? For some, the answer lies in meditation, spirituality or philosophy. For others, the cure is escaping into the imagination via dreams, fiction, games, or intoxicants. As the incessant state-changing favors the pursuit of pleasure, one must also be wary of addictive tendencies when Pisces is involved.

  • Moon applying to conjunction with ruler Jupiter in Pisces' second decan: Jupiter here takes all of the qualities of the previous bullet and makes them more expansive, optimistic, joy-seeking, and faithful. It's a very pleasant energy. The one drawback could be a possible lack of realism, but the awareness of that possibility can help steer lofty dreams toward practical manifestation.

  • Moon, Sun and Jupiter copresent with Neptune in Pisces' third decan: As if the themes described in the previous two bullets weren't dreamy enough, Neptune's presence in Pisces further blurs the lines between the real and the imagined and amplifies our desire to escape the mundane in favor of the fantastic. For those who are prone to imagining everything that could possibly go wrong, Neptune's presence can sometimes inspire anxiety. Just remember that whatever you imagine is nothing but a simulation created by the faulty computer that is your own brain. None of us knows precisely what will happen in the future, but when we consciously cultivate a positive mental attitude we become more likely to succeed no matter what life throws our way.

  • Moon and Sun sextile Uranus in Taurus' second decan: This new cycle of relating to our changing emotions is energized and supported by the ongoing radical changes to previously stable resources such as food, environment, and finances.

  • Venus conjunct Mars (degree of exaltation) and Pluto in Capricorn's third decan: The instability and change referred to in the previous bullet are responding to our associations with others for pursuing practical, material gain. This pursuit is cool headed and strategic, but also transformational, obsessive, possibly covert and likely dealing with abuses of power in one way or another. Use this energy to resolve and heal such abuses rather than perpetuate them.

  • Mercury conjunct Saturn in Aquarius' second decan: The strategic connections described in the previous bullet are responding to innovative, scientific, and disciplined thinking. This orderly, grounded, cool-headed mentality imbues practical pursuits with an unorthodox edge, but also contrasts with or counterbalances the dreamy, floaty and potentially impractical Piscean energy discussed in the first three bullets.

Recommendations:

  1. Set intentions: Consider the topics and themes described in the Chart Features section above. If you know your rising sign, check the list below for the life-area this lunation will impact for you specifically. Spend some time brainstorming on these combined topics. What are the most positive, desirable versions of these themes you can imagine for yourself? If you find yourself imagining negative scenarios that seem dauntingly plausible, think about what practical steps you could take to turn that situation positive. I like to write a list of my goals during new moons, but you could get creative with it and make some art or a vision board to visually represent your intentions.

  2. Make plans: Once your intentions are set, think about actions you can take over the next six months to make your vision a reality. Figure out what you'll do and decide when you'll do each thing.

  3. Plant metaphorical seeds: Over the next two weeks (between the now and the next full moon) take the first steps toward the goals you've set.

  4. Keep one foot on the ground: While indulging in pleasurable fantasies and lofty dreams, make sure you're also taking care of mundane reality stuff like paying bills. Ensure that whatever you decide to build conforms to local zoning laws and operates within the laws of physics.

  5. Avoid problematic temptation: Choose ethical approaches to reaching your goals. Pursue pleasures that enrich your mental, emotional and physical health and well-being. Achieve your ambitions in a way that you would be proud to share with anyone.
