Solar Eclipses in General

A solar eclipse is similar to a new moon in that both occur when the sun and moon are at the same degree of the Zodiac at the same time. During an ordinary new moon, the brilliance of the sun's rays obscures our view of the moon, beginning a new cycle related to the themes of the sign the two luminaries occupy. The vitality of spirit represented by the sun overtakes the physicality and emotionality of the body represented by the moon. We tend to have less energy for a few days during a new moon, then pick up steam with renewed vigor when the moon becomes visible once again. Astrologers commonly use the new moon phase for intention-setting, because the connection with spirit and vision is stronger while the physical and emotional capacity to act is relatively dormant or hidden.

However, during a solar eclipse, the already darkened moon obscures the light of the sun, resulting in a low-energy physical and emotional state that temporarily cuts off our ability to see that energizing source of life, beginning a considerably more challenging cycle than that of a new moon. So eclipses, unlike new moons, are poorly suited for intention-setting. They are times to play it safe and to see what happens.

This Solar Eclipse's Chart Features

  • Solar Eclipse on the North Node: The North Node is also known as the mythical Rahu in the Vedic tradition: A dragon's head severed from its body, he is ravenous and insatiable, always wanting more. A feeling of need due to persistent emptiness colors our experience of this eclipse. With the light obscured, we can't exactly see (nor predict) what this fabled beast will compel us to consume-- though knowing which house in your natal chart contains Taurus can provide some clues (see the Topics by Rising Sign section.)

  • Sun and Moon in Taurus' second decan: This eclipse concerns the work we do to accumulate and share material resources. Ordinarily the preference is for this particular type of work to be routine and unsurprising. However, that stability is unlikely with this eclipse.

  • Sun and Moon applying to a conjunction with Uranus: This combination takes the unpredictability of the North Node and amplifies it. Uranus has been disrupting reliable access to material resources since it entered Taurus in 2018. With this eclipse we may see an increase in those disruptions. Expect the unexpected where food, finances, climate and other life-sustaining resources are concerned.

  • Ruler Venus at her degree of exaltation in Pisces' third decan, applying conjunct Jupiter, separating conjunct Neptune and copresent with Mars: The sun, moon and North Node are all looking to their ruler Venus for how to behave, and she is in excellent condition and therefore inclined to steer things in a positive direction. If this were not the chart of an eclipse, it would be an excellent day to spend time with others, indulging in good food, drink, and music. Venus' influence might even result in some pleasant surprises. Or the eclipse could take an otherwise positive event and darken it. One possibility is that as a result of an indulgent and fun experience, something unexpected occurs. For example, people might have a fun night of drinking but things go overboard in some way, or something gets damaged. Another cause for caution is that Mars' presence in Pisces can cause people to pursue goals through manipulative or surreptitious means.

  • Mercury in retrograde shadow: Mercury is preparing to station retrograde on 10 May 2022, which means that things said or done at this time will likely need to be redone or revisited later. This is one more reason to be a little more cautious than usual.

Recommendations:

  1. Be more careful than usual: Since unpredictability is a key factor in this eclipse, this is not the day to take unnecessary risks, especially those that could result in physical injury or loss of livelihood.

  2. A little sobriety never hurt anyone: Take it easy with intoxicants on this day, or forego them altogether. We'll all be more inclined to go overboard in some way, but you can minimize the potential for disaster by keeping your head clear.

  3. Avoid starting something important: The chart of the moment you begin something new will influence the way that thing turns out. Unless you want your new endeavor to be consistently volatile and possibly dangerous, just wait for better skies. At the very least wait until the day after the eclipse, but if you can, I would hold off on starting anything new until after Mercury stations direct on 3 June 2022.

  4. Cleanse your energy: Many astrologers recommend taking a bath and adding salt to the water during eclipses. You may also choose to burn sage or palo santo. If you're magically inclined, the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram can be helpful. The Vedic tradition of astrology offers many mantras that one can chant to propitiate the energy of the eclipse, and these are easy to find on YouTube by searching for "Rahu eclipse mantras." Simple meditation can also do the trick.
