New Moons in General

New moons coincide with new beginnings and are well suited for intention setting and initiating new endeavors.

New moons occur every 28 days. Over the course of one year, there will be one new moon in each of the twelve signs, as well as each of the twelve life areas (called houses) in your birth chart. You can use these events as annual reviews for each part of your life by considering the topics represented in that new moon's chart and setting related goals for the corresponding life area.

That way, you'll intentionally work on every part of your life throughout the year, focusing on one per month. The Topics by Rising Sign section at the end of this article will help you determine which life area this new moon will activate in your natal chart.

Set your intentions on the day of the new moon. The two weeks following the new moon are typically excellent times to take initial steps related to those intentions. For the next six months, set goals, make plans and take actions in alignment with those intentions.

This New Moon's Chart Features

  • Moon conjunct Sun in Gemini's first decan: This new cycle concerns curiosity, learning a little about lots of different things, and exploring the many sides of oneself or any person, place, thing, or idea.

  • Gemini ruler Mercury retrograde in Taurus' third decan, conjunct South Node, copresent with Uranus and Venus: This curiosity is driven by the need to rethink practical procedures that ensure material processes run smoothly even in the face of unexpected disaster (especially those concerning commodities and finances.) This reevaluation is somewhat relentless, like an all-nighter or a design charrette, and may result in surprising innovations. It's likely that the solutions conceived now will require further revision down the road. However, there may be a lazy temptation to give this idea the stamp of approval just to be done with it. Try prototyping this idea and testing it out for awhile. Plan to return to the drawing board in a week or two to make adjustments.

  • Mercury sextile Neptune, square Saturn, and trine Pluto: This redesign of procedures outlined in the previous bullet is energized by imagination and obsession, but the new design must yield to restrictions and obligations in order to function.

  • Sun and moon separating from a sextile to Jupiter and Mars in Aries' first decan: Enthusiasm for independence and the will to separate from others to do one's own thing energizes this new cycle.

TLDR Summary

This time is well suited for rethinking your approach to handling life-sustaining material things so you'll be more likely to survive unforeseen calamities. But rather than reaching for a quick solution now, keep your mind open, collect data and experiment with different approaches for at least a few weeks before setting your new method in stone. While you should have no shortage of vision and drive for this project, the challenge lies in figuring how to make your lofty ideas function within the laws of physics and governments.

Recommendations

  1. Set intentions: Consider the topics and themes described in the Chart Features and TLDR Summary section above. If you know your rising sign, check the list below for the topics this lunation will activate for you specifically. Spend some time brainstorming on these combined topics. What are the most positive, desirable versions of these themes you can imagine for yourself? If you find yourself imagining negative scenarios that seem dauntingly plausible, think about what practical steps you could take to turn that situation positive. I like to write a list of my goals during new moons, but you could get creative with it and make some art, or a vision board, to visually represent your intentions.

  2. Make plans: Once your intentions are set, consider actions to take over the next six months to make your vision a reality. Figure out what you'll do and decide when you'll do each thing.

  3. Plant metaphorical seeds: Over the next two weeks (between the now and the next full moon) take the first steps toward the goals you've set.

  4. Work that plan: Follow through on your plan for the next six months, until the Gemini full moon, which will represent the culmination of your effort.
